Living Euljiro: What Is Lost When Alleys Are Demolished

SPEAKER: Liron Shalit

DATE: Tuesday. July 14, 2026. 7:20PM (Seoul)

VENUE: Seoul Public Activities Center (SPAC, 서울시공익활동지원센터). ‘다목적홀’ (For more information, see below.)

SUMMARY:

Over three years of filming and working within Euljiro’s century-old alleys, Liron Shalit captured the stories of craftsmen, business owners, young artists and longtime residents, their deep ties to the neighborhood, and the living society they had built together. But what started as a film driven by pure curiosity about Euljiro’s industrial ecosystem and diverse culture turned instead into a documentation of loss and displacement.

After witnessing the painful transformation of Euljiro into a high-rise apartment complex, Liron shares what he has learnt about our place in the city and how we can reclaim it as creators of spaces and memories rather than consumers – or even worse, victims.

BIO:

Liron Shalit has been creating award-winning short documentaries since 2017, focusing on social issues and urban life. Since relocating to Seoul in 2022, he has dedicated himself to documenting disappearing spaces and communities, capturing Euljiro’s distinctive culture and the stories of the people who live and work there. Living Euljiro, his debut feature documentary, is now showing at Korean and International film festivals.

A trailer for Liron’s documentary can be watched HERE.
